Importers bring a wide variety of goods into the United States for resale. Some examples of goods that importers specialize in obtaining include chemicals, electronics, machinery, clothing, automobiles and automotive parts, food, household consumer goods, toys, specialty items, textiles and apparel, and footwear. Importers maintain an awareness of regulatory guidelines and policies that affect the import of these goods so that they are in compliance with them. Depending on the goods being brought into the country importers may need to work with a diverse range of government regulatory agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT).
